    ABOUT RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

The first running book by a leading pioneering running doctor and athlete, creator of the Air Force’s Efficient Running program–the result of more than three decades of study, practice, and science that shows us in clearly illustrated and accessible text how easy it is to run efficiently and injury-free, whether you’re in your twenties, sixties, or seventies–for beginning runners and experienced marathoners.

In Run for Your Life, Dr. Mark Cucuzzella explains the simple mechanics of how our bodies have evolved and adapted to run. Despite our natural ability and our human need to run, each year more than half of all runners suffer injuries. Pain and discouragement inevitably follow. Cucuzzella’s book outlines the proven, practical techniques to avoid injury and reach the goal of personal fitness and overall health.

His book–the first running book to be written by a professor of medicine with the credibility of the Air Force behind him–gives us a straightforward, easy-to-follow look at the anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition, and/or clinical medicine with clear drawings and black-and-white photographs. The book provides illustrated exercises designed to teach healthy running, along with simple progressions, a weekly/monthly schedule detailing common mistakes, and cautions that allow the reader to tailor the training regime to individual needs and abilities. With an annotated list of videos and other innovative, book-Internet links.

The proceeds from RUN FOR YOUR LIFE will go to support Mark Cucuzzella’s community work through his non-profit organization, Eastern Area Health Education Center/Freedoms Run. Learn more here: http://freedomsrun.org/CommunityGrant.aspx

    Overfat Pandemic

    $11.99

Research demonstrates that up to 76 percent of the world’s population—or 5.5 billion people—are overfat, defined as having sufficient excess body fat to impair health. This includes nearly 90 percent of Americans—one of the highest percentages worldwide. In The Overfat Pandemic, Dr. Philip Maffetone reveals common misconceptions regarding the real meaning of “overfat,” factors that helped cause this global pandemic, and ways individuals can remedy the situation with the proper food and exercise. Other major points in the book include: • The distinction between “overweight” and “overfat” • How normal-weight people can be overfat • Why those who exercise can still be overfat, including athletes • Why waist measurement is better than the bathroom scale • How individuals can take charge of their body fat • How the overfat pandemic can be remedied through simple lifestyle changes and without diets As little as 14 percent of the world’s population has a normal body-fat percentage, and that number may be shrinking. This book aims to curtail the overfat epidemic by exposing a decades-long problem and offering a research-based, practical solution to help prevent and treat it.

  • Books Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home by Heather Anderson

Books Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home by Heather Anderson

    $17.99

National Geographic 2019 "Adventurer of the Year" Beautiful and deftly written and intimate and searing in its honesty, Anish’s is a quest to conquer the trail and her own inner darkness."-Foreword Reviews
"Filled with ruminative self-reflection, soaring natural descriptions and delightful accounts of the gracious, life-sustaining 'trail magic' of hiking culture, Thirst is a testament to human endurance, inspiring to hikers and non-hikers alike."-Shelf Awareness

By age 25, Heather Anderson had hiked what is known as the "Triple Crown" of backpacking: the Appalachian Trail (AT), Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), and Continental Divide Trail (CDT)―a combined distance of 7,900 miles with a vertical gain of more than one million feet. A few years later, she left her job, her marriage, and a dissatisfied life and walked back into those mountains.

    In her new memoir,
Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home, Heather, whose trail name is "Anish," conveys not only her athleticism and wilderness adventures, but also shares her distinct message of courage--her willingness to turn away from the predictability of a more traditional life in an effort to seek out what most fulfills her. Amid the rigors of the trail--pain, fear, loneliness, and dangers--she discovers the greater rewards of community and of self, conquering her doubts and building confidence. Ultimately, she realizes that records are merely a catalyst, giving her purpose, focus, and a goal to strive toward.

Heather is the second woman to complete the “Double Triple Crown of Backpacking,” completing the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails twice each. She holds overall self-supported Fastest Known Times (FKTs) on the Pacific Crest Trail (2013)―hiking it in 60 days, 17 hours, 12 minutes, breaking the previous men’s record by four days and becoming the first women to hold the overall record―and the Arizona Trail (2016), which she completed in 19 days, 17 hours, 9 minutes. She also holds the women’s self-supported FKT on the Appalachian Trail (2015) with a time of 54 days, 7 hours, 48 minutes. Heather has hiked more than twenty thousand miles since 2003, including ten thru-hikes. An ultramarathon runner, she has completed six 100-mile races since August 2011 as well as dozens of 50 km and 50-mile events. She has attempted the infamous Barkley Marathons four times, starting a third loop once. Heather is also an avid mountaineer working on several ascent lists in the US and abroad.

    Diabetes Unpacked

    $15.99

Diabetes used to be rare and clear. One boy in the school had Type 1 and a friend of a friend’s granny had Type 2. We now see adults being diagnosed with Type 1 and children developing Type 2. There are over 400 million diabetics world-wide – four times as many as in 1980. The vast majority of these have Type 2 – sometimes judged as a ‘lifestyle’ disease. The traditional view of diabetes is that is it a “chronic and progressive” condition and that nothing can be done about it. Serious complications include loss of eyesight, amputations and death. This book has gathered together some of the finest minds working in the field of diabetes and diet. The result is a collection of chapters by thought leaders, academics and doctors addressing the big issues. What is diabetes? What are the different types? What causes it? Who gets it? Why do we eat so much carbohydrate? Why do diabetics die of heart disease? Why do athletes commonly get Type 2 diabetes? The writers in this book approach diabetes from many different angles, but they all share one common belief: Diabetes does not need to be “chronic and progressive.” Both Type 1 and Type 2 can be substantially alleviated and the latter can be ‘put into remission.’Let us tell you how...
